Free tool · Email list cleaning
Keep bad addresses off your list.
Check an address before it joins your newsletter: we ask the mailbox provider whether it will accept mail, and flag typos, disposable inboxes and role addresses like info@. Free, no signup, one address at a time.
About list cleaning
How newsletter lists go bad
Every list collects addresses that will never read a word: typos at signup, inboxes people abandoned, throwaway addresses made to grab a download, and role addresses like info@ that a team, or nobody, reads.
They cost you twice. Hard bounces tell mailbox providers you don’t keep your list clean, and addresses that never open drag down the engagement signals Gmail and Outlook use to decide where your mail lands.
A routine that works
- At signup: catch typos and fake addresses before they’re added. Confirmed opt-in helps most.
- After every send: remove hard bounces right away.
- Every few months: find readers who stopped opening, send one re-engagement email, and stop sending to the ones who don’t respond.
The checker above handles the first step for a single address. For a whole list, use your email platform’s bounce handling and engagement data.
What the answers mean
- Looks deliverable. The mailbox provider accepts mail for this address.
- Can’t tell. The provider won’t say whether the mailbox exists. Many large providers answer this way for every address.
- Risky. The address may bounce or may never be read.
- Will bounce. Mail to this address won’t be delivered. Remove it.
- Looks like a typo. The address probably has a mistake in it, and we suggest the domain you likely meant.
We also tell you when an address is disposable, the kind people make once and abandon, or a role address like info@ or sales@, usually read by a team or nobody.
Letterhead finds the ghosts already on your list.
Every Letterhead newsletter sorts its readers into engagement groups, including Ghosts: readers who have stopped opening and clicking. Each group shows how many readers it holds, so you can size it before you send.

FAQ
Questions about cleaning an email list
How often should I clean my email list?
Remove hard bounces after every send. Look at readers who’ve stopped opening every few months.
Should I remove role addresses like info@?
Not automatically. Some are read by a real person who signed up on purpose. But they’re often shared or unattended, so watch how they engage.
Why does the checker say “Can’t tell”?
Some mailbox providers, including many large ones, give the same answer for every address, so no checker can confirm whether the mailbox exists.
Can I check a whole list here?
No. The checker takes one address at a time and allows a few an hour. It’s for a quick check before an address goes on your list.
Do you keep the address I check?
No. The address goes to our checker and nowhere else, and we don’t keep it.
