Free tool · Gmail clipping checker

Will Gmail clip your email?

Gmail cuts off messages with more than about 102KB of HTML. Paste your email to see how heavy it is and what’s making it heavy, along with the links, readability and bounce risk checks from Letterhead’s editor. Free, no signup.

We check the DKIM selectors Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 and the big email platforms use. If yours isn’t one of them, paste the full source of an email you sent, as it arrived (in Gmail: “Show original”), into “Check an email” and we’ll read it from there.

Know your DKIM selector?

It’s the s= value in an email’s DKIM-Signature header.

About clipping

Why Gmail clips your newsletter

When an email’s HTML is bigger than about 102KB, Gmail shows the first part and replaces the rest with “[Message clipped] View entire message”. Everything below the cut stays hidden until the reader clicks: your sponsor, your last story and, usually, your unsubscribe link.

The open-tracking pixel often sits near the bottom of an email too, so a clipped send can also undercount your opens.

What makes an email heavy

  • Inline styles repeated on every element, often added by templates and editors.
  • Long tracking links, repeated for every story.
  • Code pasted in from other tools, like comments and empty tags.
  • Not images, unless they’re embedded in the code. Gmail measures the HTML, not the pictures it links to.

Check it, then see it

The checker weighs your HTML and shows what’s making it heavy. To see the cut for yourself, run the same HTML through Inbox preview, which photographs it in a real Gmail inbox and marks whether it was clipped.

In Letterhead, these checks run while you write.

Every issue gets a content check before it goes out: bounce risk, links that won’t work, what an AI inbox will read, readability, and email weight with what’s making it heavy. Letterhead also strips redundant styling from what it sends, so your newsletter goes out lighter than you wrote it.

FAQ

Questions about Gmail clipping

What is Gmail’s clipping limit?

About 102KB of HTML. Gmail doesn’t document the number; senders have measured it. It applies to the HTML, not to linked images.

Does a clipped email hurt deliverability?

Not directly. But readers can’t reach your unsubscribe link without clicking through, and some will mark the email as spam instead, which does hurt.

How do I make my email lighter?

Cut repeated inline styles, shorten tracking links and remove pasted-in code. In Letterhead, Email Weight shows what’s heavy while you write, and sends go out with redundant styling stripped.

Do you keep the domain or email I check?

No. We don’t store what you paste or the domain you look up.
